RESIDENTS at Regis Aged Care, Salisbury, are experiencing the spirit of the Year of Mercy thanks to visits from Year 5 and 6 students from St Pius X Catholic Primary School.
Assistant principal for religious education Kelly Short said the students were developing a hands-on understanding of how to provide Christian service for their local community. “By putting social justice into action our students are gaining valuable insights into the lives of elderly residents,” Mrs Short said.
“They have created a better connection between generational groups and contribute to the well-being of residents by providing them with much needed company.”
Students spend time with the Regis Care residents by playing board games, sharing meals and engaging in conversation. Shannon Phillips, from Regis Aged Care, said the visits were a highlight for the residents who looked forward to the company every fortnight.
St Pius X and Regis Aged Care are preparing to launch the “Adopt a Grandparent” initiative, creating bonds between students and residents as pen pals.
The initiative will feature students inviting their pen pals as VIP’s to various school events.
