ST Mary’s Primary School, Beaudesert has won $20,000 in a state-wide competition to rebuild the staffroom burnt down in a fire last month.
The school beat more than 900 Queensland schools to win the QT Mutual Bank Staffroom for Improvement competition.
More than 30,000 people registered to vote on the competition website, giving “apples” to schools and individual teachers.
St Mary’s received more than 50,000 “apples”.
The school’s secretary was ranked the fifth highest apple earner, winning $1000.
School Principal Tim Stinson said winning the competition was “a big surprise” for the school.
“We really appreciate all the support and good that the community has done to make this happen for us,” Mr Stinson said.
“Considering what we are faced with in the next year or so, it is gratifying to know that we have so much support.”
Many St Mary’s staff members, including Year 7 teacher Luke Thomsen, used Facebook to promote the school’s entry in the competition.
But he said it was parents who “weren’t going to benefit directly from the competition” who began to spread the word through the whole community.
“We’re very appreciative of the support given by the entire community and the school,” he said.
QT Mutual Bank spokeswoman Liz Vella said the school community were “hard working, deserving” winners.
