THE Mummy was one of the most popular films in Australia in 1999. So it was inevitable that this mummy would return sooner or later and here it is!
The plot is so similar to the original it seems unnecessary to summarise it, but here goes.
Legionnaire Rick (Brendan Fraser), now married to Egyptologist Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) with their son Alex (Freddie Boath), discover a secret tomb wherein they find a bracelet that unlocks the powers of the Scorpion King (The Rock – that is his name) and sets free his evil lackey Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) from a 3,000 year sleep.
The bad guys led by Lock-Nah (Adewale) want the bracelet so they can use it for their evil purposes. I wonder who wins out in the end?
We are not meant to take The Mummy Returns seriously, but it is a pale imitation of clever pastiche.
Unfortunately it is not very funny. Indeed this film is quite violent in parts and some children could find it disturbing.
The Mummy Returns is a high tech, special effects formulae piece made to grab more box office cash.
