EVEN though many Australians disliked Christopher Skase, given that he recently died, Let’s Get Skase is now in poor taste.
I appreciate the producer’s dilemma. They could not have predicted Mr Skase’s demise and they have to release the film to see a return for their investors, including all Australian taxpayers who partly funded it.
A dramatic comedy, Let’s Get Skase is about Peter Dellasandro’s (Lachy Hulme) plot to gather together five unlikely compatriots, led by Danny D’Amato (Alex Dimitriades) and kidnap the business fugitive from Spain and force him to face the Australian courts for the collapse of Quintex.
The problem is that this film is neither dramatic nor very funny. We have been here, done this before, and there is nothing interesting or inventive in this particular re-telling.
The script is banal, the acting is generally weak and Matthew George’s direction is limp. There are four things going for Let’s Get Skase – the action sequences are very well edited by Michael Collins; the variety of Perth locations is used well; Wayne Hassell and Dianne West really look like Christopher and Pixie Skase; and the film only lasts 90 minutes.
God has Christopher Skase now and so all the right questions are being asked and, in equal measure, justice and compassion are being administered.
This film will not make you laugh for long and will do nothing for the friends and family who mourn Mr Skase’s loss. Give it a miss.
