 bishop*

-- returns items that contain words that begin with the string e.g bishop, bishops, bishopric
Similarly  *bishop  would return items with bishop or archbishop. And  *bishop*  would return even more items with bishop, archbisop, bishops, archbishops, bishopric, archbishopric etc....
Exact phrase
 "Archdiocese of Brisbane"

-- returns only items that contain this exact phrase

An example:

You are wanting items that deal with priestly vocations.

If you enter  priest* vocation*  you will get items that have at least one of the following words:
priest priesthood priestly priests vocation vocations vocational .... possibly a lot of items.

If you narrow it to  priest* AND vocation*  you will be narrowing down to items that at least contain both words, and so exclude religious vocations etc..

You could try   "priestly vocations"  , but that would miss items such as 'vocations to the priesthood'. The exact phrase is best kept for items like "Pope Benedict" or "Archdiocese of Brisbane" or quotations such as "let your light shine".
