FAMILY, friends and fellow Handmaids of Our Lord recently joined Handmaids of Our Lord Sister Mary Garnier for her golden jubilee.
The Handmaids of Our Lord were founded in Papua New Guinea in 1918. The order has about 70 nuns missioning in Papua New Guinea and northern areas of Australia.
The celebration on November 25 at St Therese’s Church, Bentley Park, included a Mass celebrated by Edmonton parish priest Fr John McGrath.
Sr Garnier joined the Handmaids of Our Lord in 1960 and was professed three years later in 1963. She was born on Poruma (Coconut) Island in the Torres Strait and moved to Hammond Island with her family as a child.
Sr Garnier said despite a vocation spanning 53 years she had no plans to retire and was enjoying her work with children and youth in the Cairns diocese.
