Interactive stories boost literacy skills

YEAR 10 IT students from Stuartholme School have created a series of animated and interactive stories to improve the literacy and communication skills of St Ignatius primary school students.
The new project is a response to the Queens-
land results from the 2012 NAPLAN test.
The test showed that more than 75,000 Queensland students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 did not meet the national minimum standards for literacy and communications.
The low test results prompted a project in the Stuartholme School Year 10 IT class to create a series of animated and interactive stories for primary school children.
During a trial project, the Year 10 students took their stories, created on portable devices, to St Ignatius’ for a short storytelling session.
Year 2 teacher Dee Palmer said the project was “invaluable to the student’s development”.
“They’re witnessing what can be done with an animated story and how technology works seamlessly to aid learning,” she said.
“It’s certainly enhanced their literacy and communication skills.
“I have seen typically quiet students come out of their shell and interact with the girls and the stories – it’s great.
“I enjoyed hearing their ideas and also learning how they thought my story could be improved.”
Year 10 IT student Sabrina Glik said it was a great experience to assist the younger students in their learning.
“Literacy skills are a growing problem for primary aged children in Australia so it was great to be able to do something positive towards stopping that,” Miss Glik said
“I can see technology and animation being significant elements of learning in the future.”
After a successful trial with St Ignatius Primary School, Stuartholme hope to make the interactive storytelling sessions available to more inner-Brisbane primary schools .
